Symantec was unable to help so I have recently finished up a MDT 2012 server and will try the FZG1 on that.

I will let everyone know what we find.

Hi Nathan7483,

Hope the MDT 2012 route works out for you, but in case you end up getting stuck I wanted to let you know that we'll have a specific support file (called a Platform Pack) so this model will work on SmartDeploy in the next few days. If it is enough of a headache, it might be worth considering trying out SmartDeploy instead of MDT.

Thanks!

If I turn UEFI to ON I can get it to boot through the gamber johnson dock to our MDT server.

After this boot sequence, it just goes to a black screen :(

Spencer I thought about trying out Smart Deploy but decided on MDT.

If I cant get this I may have to go down that road. Since I have so much time into MDT I want to exhaust every resource I can with this first, then go to something else.

I have asked our vendor about a different dock, I also have an email into a panasonic engineer.

Sounds good, and I totally understand! These Panasonic Toughbook machines are notoriously difficult to support from a driver perspective, even excluding imaging tools. Sorry, I don't know what is causing the black-screen or I'd provide some advice there.

Does this model have Secure Boot? If so, can you ‘Disable Secure Boot’ in the BIOS and try again?
This black screen boot could also occur if your boot image was not UEFI compatible. However, since MDT 2012, MDT will build all ISO’s and media folders with both legacy BIOS and UEFI boot files and boot sectors. Which version of MDT are you using? This blog post by Michael Niehaus explains this and much more about UEFI.

Also, UEFI requires a different hard drive partition setup. UEFI needs a GPT drive layout and the efi partition is FAT32. UEFI cannot read NTFS boot partitions. The TechNet article ‘Sample: Configure UEFI/GPT - Based Hard Drive Partitions by Using Windows PE and DiskPart’ shows the differences between the two formats. This will be important for the USB deployment method that you mentioned, as an NTFS USB drive cannot boot as UEFI. This TechNet article may also help you out with the USB deployment issue, ‘Windows PE USB: Install Windows PE to a USB drive’. There are some troubleshooting tips in this article that may help.

Hope this helps,

We are using the newest version, I downloaded it about two weeks ago.

I appreciate the links, I will look at them later but they look quite helpful!!

Currently I am building images of all the "non police" devices we have.

We used the Dell KACE K2000 appliance and the FZ-VEBG11 desktop dock to capture and deploy an image. The trick was to change the USB settings in BIOS from 3.0 to 2.0 for a successful PXE boot. We also had the keyboard connected to the device's USB port, and used the FX-G1's volume and Windows buttons along with the keyboard to navigate menus in the boot environment.

You guys can also use Acronis True Image 2014 to capture image on the ToughPad. I did this with Windows 8 Ent x64. Can't do it on Win 8 Ent x86 as no drivers available yet. Used the FZ-VEBG11 dock as well. But other issue came out. Getting black screen after it has been on the dock for some time. But if it is OFF the dock, it doesn't happen. Maybe something wrong with dock circuitry? Will call Panasonic about this.

Hope this helps.

The G1 is a challenge to image, especially if you have the model without an Ethernet port. However, we are able to image Window 8.1 Pro w/ Acronis Snap Deploy 4. The USB bootable agent is both UEFI and BIOS bootable. You do need to change the BIOS settings to boot to Compatible and enable CSM. There is a step by step upgrade doc to W8.1P from W8P from Panasonic that enumerates all the drivers needed. Acronis can do standalone deployment also (which is one by one for out of network or mobile units). While it supports PXE I did not try that. I also tried to inject the Ethernet drivers into the Linux USB boot drive but was not successful there though Acronis claims it should work. The Havis dock we used has an Ethernet port but there is no Linux driver for the Acronis boot drive so it is not recognized. Well we are doing this for a feasibility trial before production deployment.

For what it is worth.

Not sure if anyone has tried this or not but with MDT 2012 if you use the new windows PE image which is basically a windows 8 boot image with Windows 7 there is something in it that will allow you to use a keyboard and mouse to deploy using MDT while the toughpad is sitting in the docking cradle.

I can conform that we did get imaging working with the help of Panasonic.  We were unable to get "boot to network" working, we must boot to USB KEY.  Currently we are imaging them with out standard Windows 7 image, I am going to make a VM in VMware Workstation to get it.

We are using a driver package that injects the drivers after the image is installed.

I am attaching a screen of our MDT server.

Using MDT 2012 and running into similar issues. Cannot get past the "Loading files" screen. Got stuck at that point and neither mouse or keyboard will respond. Tried reloading the device using just a regular Windows 8 boot disk, again froze at the Windows splash screen. My device is the FZ-G1 model.
